You’re wordpress website is up and running, looks slick and has great content, but you need more traffic. So what are the best plugins to make your website search engine friendly and start climbing the ranks?

There are many options out there, but we will focus on one of the most important plugins to start with, and we have found it to perform very well.

This is SEO Ultimate,  a very flexible and powerful search engine optimization plugins that handles almost all of your seo needs. Download and install the plugin from your wordpress dashboard under “plugins” > “add new.” After activation, you will see a new icon in the left menu bar called “SEO.” This is where the settings for this plugins reside. Right off the bat you will see options for entering individual title tags, description tags and keyword tags for all your pages and posts. So mix it up with different content, keeping your “money tags,” or the ones you wish to be found with first, in all of these.

You will also see a “404 Monitor” in the menu. While you don’t have to do anything within wordpress for this function, it is a great tool to monitor what google is seeing – like broken page links from an old previous version of your site. You can then go to your google webmaster tools and test each of these links. If they indeed show as not found, you can then remove them from google’s listings – just follow the instructions on webmaster tools. Keep in mind, you can also use the “Canonicalizer” function in SEO Ultimate to redirect non-existant pages.

Next, under “Meta Robot Tags,” make sure to check the first two options:

Don’t use this site’s Open Directory description in search results.
Don’t use this site’s Yahoo! Directory description in search results.

This will keep your site from being listed with default descriptions from these two directories and is important to control your content.

Finally, a most important tool in SEO Ultimate is the “Deeplink Juggernaut” function. With this tool, you can add key words and phrases within your site’s content, and automatically create deep internal links pointing to specific pages and posts on your site. Within one week, one of our sites showed an increase from 210 to 3,500 internal links showing up in webmaster tools!

There are additional functions like robot text file creator, slug optimizer, and rich snippet creator which greatly enhance your basic seo structure.
